原诗韵尾为ABBCAC格式，译本采用同韵。

他追求的是一种完美臻至
他创意的是诗歌一目了然
他对人的愚庸，了如指尖
他对兵戎、舰艇潜心运筹
他一笑，大臣们立马捧腹笑涕
他一嚎，顽童们就倒地在街头

Epitaph On a Tyrant
W.H. Auden

Perfection,of a kind,was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the street.

作者简介：威斯坦•休•奥登（英语：Wystan Hugh Auden，1907年2月21日－1973年9月29日，著作多以W. H. Auden出版），英国-美国诗人，20世纪重要的文学家之一，中国抗日战争期间曾在中国旅行，并与其同伴小说家克里斯托弗•依修伍德合著了《战地行》一书。
