Three Poems by Zhiwu Jiang
Translated by Xiaoyuan Yin
Butterfly-shaped Brooch
It is such a moment, when the heat of this city shoves the clouds
Further away into the distance
While the magnifier of faith, in a face-off with it, stands on the frozen North Pole
Upon the cold wings and dried body of this little butterfly
Spreads the sheen of a more vivid romance
During the transient days and nights, the butterfly has been damaged
Magnetic force still lingering on wings
The puffing pollen, and the whistling wind
Will ring through my devout ears and my body as well
In the center of blooming darkness, in a state of equilibrium
I can not peel open the dying-down flames
Fearing that it would cast a shadow upon the words I write
I should not lay dynamite beneath the vanity of a city
Or summon a rain
How fragile are the fictional shadows
We are easily unwrapped, and will easily wither away
This little butterfly-shaped brooch
Is the last masterpiece by wrecked seasons and broken-winged butterflies
Survivors will attend banquets with it
And speak words of wonder

A Crepuscular Rendezvous
Out there lies the wilderness that belonged to us once
Where three maidens found love of their hearts
It is the place, where my sheep has lost one of its eyes
Always, a lunatic beds down and stays overnight
Scaring the passers-by
Finally one day he was set fire to, from in the back
We meet here, with the same nationality
And in the same stream of time
The resilience of the twilight is wearing out
and features of the wilderness have changed
Against the backdrop of twilight, no sympathized sorrow or morning alarms
should be remembered
The only thing we need to do is to swallow the wisps of smoke
That rose from my mom’s stove
And the rays of light from the shrine
The shivering air of the dusk, is a mixture of floating kisses and fleeting time
Converging at a crepuscular rendezvous

This Repeats Every single Night
Every single night, fatigued doors and windows stand
Under the weight of coldness of cities
They curtain me off from others, from the cluttered-up streets
The clothing of the night is both brilliant and concrete
While the flesh delicate and relaxed
The mid-night party is held on the eighth floor
With petals of withered skin dancing in the wine
In the night, my hard-working parents embrace each other again
After all these long years of love and devotion
I don’t mind what sign the darkness would give me
Beneath the black velvet of this city, I just stick to my own dreams
On the vast earth, and among its mortal beings
The neon lights are left shining alone upon the building
Every night, the tramps moving along the streets
Are embossed out of the city night, as its finishing touch
The iron has bestowed its strength upon me, for climbing forward persistently
In the darkness, the shimmering doors awake in silence
Will collapses into my corner of deep blue
Inside my soul, this bitter winter rings like a song
Gently through the night
Underneath the curtain of the night, people in costumes were taking a bow
Outside there lays the wet, gloomy graveyard
Where the pale-blue wildfires dance
On every single night, my flames were lit up
And smothered secretly again
