SUITCASE

No one can predict the size,the shape,or even the location

Of the room where you will live a long time,

But every time you pack

You’re thinking about that room.

You’re imagining the color of the draperies,

You’re deciding the desk should face the window in summer,

When the sun is overhead,

But face the wall in winter,

When the light’s so low it hits you in the eyes.

In winter there are no distractions,you study the wall.

But in summer the trolley stops in front of the Ministry of Public Instruction.

Usually it sits there,nobody moves,but sometimes

It’s crossing the river.

没人能预知尺寸、外观，

甚至你会长待的房间某一位置，

但是每一次你打包的时候

都会想起那个房间。

你总是想象布料的颜色，

你认为在夏季书桌必须对着窗台，

当阳光掠过头顶

但只能照到冬季的墙壁，

在光线昏暗的时候浸入你的眼睛。

在冬季根本没有什么干扰，你专注地对着墙。

不过到了夏季，公共教学部前的无轨电车会阻挡你的视线。

它常待在那里，谁也不来搬，但是有时

它就了越过河流。

You’re thinking about that room.
都会想起那个房间。

“想起”意味着在想过去发生的某件事，但是这里是在想象没有发生的事，这样才能和后面的想象衔接。

(2)
the desk should face the window in summer,
When the sun is overhead,
But face the wall in winter,
When the light’s so low it hits you in the eyes.
在夏季书桌必须对着窗台，
当阳光掠过头顶
但只能照到冬季的墙壁，
在光线昏暗的时候浸入你的眼睛。

这是一组对称的句子：

书桌必须对着窗台
在夏季的太阳在头顶上的时候
但是（书桌要）对着墙
在冬天射入你的眼睛的光线是如此暗淡的时候

这就引出后面说的要“研究墙壁”的话来。

But in summer the trolley stops in front of the Ministry of Public Instruction.
不过到了夏季，公共教学部前的无轨电车会阻挡你的视线。

trolley 是有轨电车。这句话是“不过到了夏季，有轨电车停在公共教学部前”，作者没有说阻挡你的视线，不是为什么要加这个本来没有的意思。

我觉得学术问题是可以讨论的。如有不同意见，我欢迎。谢谢。

我也有个手提箱，手提箱很漂亮，箱里的内容也是我装进去的，不敢轻易地打开箱读它。
