Water Tune
Prelude
In the swift river of life I sing with you a song,
So mighty to break the nets above and snares below.
Give me a reed flute to play for you a world of changes,
So thrilling to turn the icy sea into waves of willow.
With ups and downs, days and nights, bitterness and sweetness,
Why bother with life or death, joy or sorrow?
Giving me a knowing smile,
The fishing man deemed me to be his fellow.
To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in hand, and eternity in the hollow.
Jade Tower Love
One
In the full smiles and sweet smell of mums,
For the first time we met.
So indifferent to the encounter,
I’m now painfully upset.
The love song is streaming endlessly!
Bathed in deep affection, by words I’m beset.
Silent love glances of the fleeting honey days
Make the affectionate green grass fret.
Jade Tower Love
Two
For what are you sobbing again,
Drooping your head silent for the hour?
Moments of beauty will never return,
With us two sharing the moon in the tower.
It’s the Clear Autumn Festival
With beautiful mums and sweet osmanthuses all in flower.
Just indulge ourselves in the enchanting scene,
And don’t sigh for the shortness of the love shower.
Jade Tower Love
Three
The tune of the flute from afar
Still echoes in the sky of cold light.
Leaning against each other in the tower
We prove our love like the moon clear and bright.
Sparrows like to chatter but worse are the crows
Resenting the snow pure and white.
Regardless of the smearing
I will go for you to the hell even in the darkest of night.
Jade Tower Love
Four
The gentle smiles and clear eyes make stronger
The taste of the cup of mellow wine in fingers slender.
Touched by your tenderness tonight I will drink till all's blue.
Not for melancholy but for the deep love in the cup for you.
Wish you henceforth everlasting happiness
Free of all worries and bitterness.
Jade Tower Love
Five
Dawn chosen for our sweet date
I could only see the sun shining high.
Tree shadow moving farther eastwards
I could only hear jackdaws on the branches cry.
Irritated by the torturous waiting,
Into a great rage I would fly.
But that you came at last
Turned me back into a happy guy.
Jade Tower Love
Six
Once soaring hard and high like an eagle in the sky
I wanted to be one of the few heroes of the holy place.
To have an accidental gaze at you,
I almost fell down like a shaking tower in disgrace.
Having found a rose rare in the lofty mountains with flowing water,
What do I care for the gossips spread apace?
Ruined halfway as I might be,
Why can’t I laugh off the empty fame and the false face?
Jade Tower Love
Seven
Dating at the end of the Chengbi River,
We made sincere wishes to the river God.
I would like to be a gardener for you,
A beautiful flower that has just learned to nod.
Why don’t you believe the world will change?
And bloom in the wrong season for rod.
Weak and soft are ordinary red flowers,
Withered and fallen for people to trod.
Jade Tower Love
Eight
Once dried up in the river outside my room,
Blue water again swells up under branches of peach blossom.
With forlorn wandering souls for home,
Swallows fly back and pair-perch in the attics of their sanctum.
Mountains between us not obstacles but flowers in bloom,
I dream of you restlessly every night in my sky kingdom.
Birds’ merry singing always turns into sound of gloom,
And good wine only into bitter tears in the asylum.

Jade Tower Love

In littering night like layers of jade,
Two mandarin ducks perch deep in the green thickets,
Furiously disturbed by dazzling stars like the cascade
Peeping down with no blink like bayonets.
Missing you restlessly like a frightened deer,
I pray to God for our love true,
Wishing that you can turn into all those stars near,
So I can gaze up all night at you.

Chancing upon each other again in my dream last night,
I found no more of those days in our spring so bright.
‘Old now, Don’t idle away!’
‘Alas!’ in unison we sighed in dismay.
Unwilling to accept our grey hair,
We could still be happy in our love affair
Soon I was wide awake to see,
Far far away you were on the other side of the sea.

I’m raptured by a wisp of smoke curling upward from the censer.
Eyebrows refreshed by art,

How can I alone rise to it superior!
When I’m awake in melancholy from the dream like breeze,

Bright eyes looking drunk at the cup full of fragrant wine,
My new love’s voice rang out the charming trill of a nightingale.
Both of us depressed and confused with worries in mind,
Every string touched made the endless mutual yearning in ail.
Shaking hands again when the melody faded into the dense vine,
We drank to the last drop of the cup in cheer and wail.
Talking in sweet murmur,
We confided in gentle whisper.

West wind last night blowing the tower with rain patters,
By which my autumn sentiments were roused.
Were they rain patters or leaf shatters,
By which my sadness and loneliness was aroused?

Leaning against the railings after rising to my feet,

Dream in the tower broken,

Cuckoo singing an elegy for petals fallen,

We shared the spring stars twinkling.

And where in this world there is no worry?
Burdened by all sorts of feelings endlessly,

Parting left us two staying separated mournfully,
And we had more regret than love fatally.

Cuddling, of the forest nightfall we were unaware,
And In the dusk the afterglow did gradually disappear.
With its shadow casted on the river,
The moon looked like a hook in the water.
Late at night we still stood abreast there,
Listening to the rapid billows together.
What did the rapid billows roar?
Only the true love of us and no more.

Beauty
Unaware of autumn leaving when together we stayed.
In intimacy, we were each other’s shadow,
For only one night of separation,
Slightly quivering, she snuggled up to me like a willow?
Pouting bashfully in all kinds of charming postures,
In pleasure she yet made complaints with a voice mellow.
From today on, never asking about the causes,
I will love tenderly this beauty now resting her head on my elbow.

Like a Dream
Sharing the same warm quilt in sweetness,
We embraced each other all the lovely long night.
There came a burst of cry out of true love,
For that she would desperately fight.
As if in a dream, as if in a dream:
In tears under the sparse stars I saw you off in the dim light.

Our love was thicker than milk,
When last year came spring.
Forgetting the withering and blooming of the flowers,
Quietly and lonely left spring.
Now my love still far away from home,
There again returns spring.
She appears in great sorrows,
When I’m opening the curtain to welcome spring.

Water Tune
With the moon shining afar,
The sea melts into the blue sky.
To where are the red clouds slowly wandering,
And tonight have suddenly flown by?
All turned into the worldly flowers.
Pacing under the moon roaming high,
We dance gracefully and merrily in the breeze,
Bantering at the clear window with a lingering firefly,
As if best childhood friends before,
With each other, you and I are never shy.
Let’s snuggle each other tenderly,
For, in this world, joy always will soon say goodbye.
Just leave alone the moon dim, the flowers dark,
And the cold dew wetting the lichen getting dry.
Why do we care for jade palace?
If we have got the fairyland of love that will never die.
Cherish this fate of love,
And it will grow in the heaven forever alive.

Lotus breeze was again loafing leisurely around,
Caressing the lovely pink and tender jade green.
Who could tell the heart secret of the lotus girl
At about the age of eighteen?
Sleepy with eyes half opened,
She hadn’t made herself look tidy and clean.
With slight smile dimples half a day kissed by the breeze,
She flushed the sunset as the beauty queen.

For what am I sighing in alternation?
For all the solemn vows and sweet dates
That after all have turned into depression!
The moon wanes more than it waxes.
Whom can I tell this impression?
Can’t you see the seagulls and waves?
They meet and love, and yet fly away in separation,
Leaving endless whiteness for empty gazes.
Let me sing only for you a song with deep emotion...
Henceforth, we will have no more hugs but worry
The tree at the window will droop lonely like a fantom
Redoubling the pathos and misery.
Rainbows fade easily with the cold autumn
And so are the snares of love in a world of treachery!
Only in dreams can we find our love sanctum,
Alert for the wrong paths and the candle in the wind of savagery
Vainly making people grieved on the road lonesome.
Wish you well from the bottom petal of my heart as a solitary!

How can we for long hesitate!
Trying strolling in the open forest with my mate,
I warn myself and vow:
Human desire and heavenly heart are fighting now;
The latter will triumph, we both wish and believe.
Many times we give each other’s soul relief
And suddenly feel a bright future for the way home,
Sweeping our hearts like clear water with no foam.
The vow made in the woods we can still hear,
And why do you back out in a twinkle of fear?
Making his loyal and attic faith vain,
And him fall into the abyss of desire again?
It is easy to go without sex and charms,
In that somewhere your heart can still find warm arms!
But God’s will always go against man’s will
And nothing can we do but obey for good or ill.
Henceforth, talk no more about dreams and fate;
It has broken the heart before the song fades late!

No more sobs and chokes, my dear!
It’s intolerable to see eyes full of tear,
So bright and clear!
Why my original sympathy for your wandering life here
Has been licked with new hatred and jeer?
All because of too much care I volunteer
Forgetting a flower would soon wither as her human peer,
Unable to stand heat or cold excessive in her short career.
Millions of my offences for you I will never regret nor fear.
I would like to retreat like an interim wandering star.
And let others be brown noses and gilding lilies in the jar.
I’m roaming, chanting over hills and along rivers from afar,
Silently wishing you a favorable wind all the way so far.
If any storms and billows there are
Remember to come back to this genial harbor and my guitar,
Waiting for the ship sailed trippingly by the old tar…
The above is a promise of gold bearing no mar.
And this poem serves as a witness on a par.

So many grudges and grieves
Folded high in the sky like clouds of leaves
Roll back and forth with the wind that will never land!
How can a slender willow stand
Such rocking and shaking!
Cast surely by God to this world as an offering
For all the sufferings a beauty has to shoulder!
Who can wash the monstrous hatred with magic powder?
I’ve experienced in depth ways of this world,
Laughing at all the howling and slandering of the underworld
And the frequent rolling of their eyes.
Honor or disgrace, joy or sorrow, to me, are merely flies,
If only our hearts and souls would never part
Why let glistening tears drip in our heart?
Deep into the hell and any vice I might have sunk,
Never do I repent nor funk.
Let the soft silk itself wrap the spring cocoon
And turn our sorrows into a love balloon!

Don’t pluck the strings of the lute,
Lest they couldn’t stand the bleak and desolate sound
And break halfway with a bang like an ill salute.
I don’t complain not because I have no bosom friend around,
But because of too much bitterness for me to uproot!
Can’t you hear the river sob with rapids that resound?
Green water flows mirror-smooth in the depth as if tuned by a flute,
And deep in my heart thousands of waves weigh me down.
Don’t dwell on all secrets and worries,
Just hug each other in silence and tears of sadness,
And in glistening tears chew quietly the million knots in dreams
And all the happiness and bitterness!

The fairyland once near is now a shadowland to me.
I am now worried by the worry that I have had about you.

And now with the same worry and the same oath in mind,
Why should we fear the ruthless west wind in the wood?

All flowers are blooming and withering:
Red hot flames from the silk-trees are hanging
Snowflakes in the pears are flickering
And purple clouds on the Chinaberries are curling.
With their aromas floating and their beauty fading
Far and near the charming spring is still roaming.
Only in this blossom season so enchanting and rare
Together such pleasure we can share.
We part reluctantly with the returning soul for a pair.
With spring now in the air,
The moon tonight hangs lonely around up there
Casting afar the silver light no one would care!

Withered flowers and fading leaves make a miserable spring
And a song of desolation the open grassland is doomed to sing
Lovesickness suffuses this open grassland far and near
For what is the cuckoo whispering in my ear?
Sadly, spring disappears with my love still at the world’s end
And the pear flowers again miss the spring, their best friend
Don’t recall those fragrant flowers and plants with tearful eyes
Drifting in dreams in life, we are home anywhere with no ties?

One
Viewing all sails when standing in the setting sun,
I wait daily at the mouth into which two rivers run.
My heart whirls with the whirlpools with spray,
And the tenderness left on my bosom is blown away.
I try to wrap up your love like the gossamer but in vain,
And never forget our first meeting in the tower in rain.
With flowering shoots my eyes are filled
And I forget just our intimacy, when thrilled.
When can we meet each other again
After you leave with this spring then?
Drooping my head, I am shocked to see
Faded flowers fallen everywhere around me.
Two
So long we hugged in my dream we could no longer part
In melancholy I woke up to find another feeling in my heart.
Far from home, with whom can I drink my fill and depart?
Only to a frail spray can I raise my glass with loneliness to impart.
In the willows outside the tower, warblers are twittering long
Unaware of all worries in this world to which they don’t belong.
Recalling those days with graceful sleeves we danced along
I find my sweetheart and our love glances gone with her song.

Three
My heart broke before I heard the song that would melt the moonlight.
When the pear flowers bloomed in winter overnight,
How could they stand being twisted in the frost with no sunlight!
Even if sweet flowers are forever in blossom without blight,
How could they free themselves from lovesickness even slight?
In the yard she looked as charming as the moon in the soft light.
The cold wind was sweeping off all flowers left all night,
And sobs of pathos were faintly heard when all was quiet
Lowering my head, whom should I ask outright:
Why do we rashly part, hugging the spring so bright?

Disturbed by unknown sorrows
In the light rain at night like tiny arrows
I am annoyed by the first sun rays through the windows.
With misty rain drizzling in thick fogs like billows
I am all lost, vast and hazy like shadows,
In a rising wisp of the Magnolia fragrance inviting sparrows.
Somehow carried away by some emotion cherished by swallows
I fall in my dream onto a road through meadows
For wanderers to roam to see rainbows.
When loneliness wakes me up recalling the sleep talking at the pillows
I find myself in the shade of green willows
In which warblers are singing sadly with their fellows.

Five
In the beautiful sunlight as thin as a piece of crystal gauze.
I ascend the pavilion several times more
And quit when I almost get atop with both my legs sore.
Fearing to see the white sails appear and disappear offshore,
We have missed a sweet date for love in the setting sun.
Where is the cuckoo singing so desolately as a lonely nun?
With great regret in words one by one,
For the wine cup of joy and fun.
Please tell the forlorn cuckoo to stop;
Where there’s no sorrow and joy in this world, even at the top?

Up and down in the wind the fallen flowers keep flying,
With slight desires lingering, I wake up still sleeping.
Ashes of desires rising again with the wind after falling,
I miss you ceaselessly like the river flowing.
Getting up and overlooking all of the night sky changing,
I see no stars in pairs and close my eyes in silent thinking.
What come back to me are the days we were dancing and singing
And my loves, new or old, both leave me in suffering.

Seven
Not having shown the bottom of our hearts to each other
We have fallen in love sooner.
Blown away again suddenly by the east-wind forever
Is my dear miserable flower!
With so many worries of mine whom can I bother?
All held up by the floating clouds in clutter.
How can I get thousands of threads of gossamer?
With which to cover the road of spring and fly to the earth’s corner.
Know that the silent wishes I make for you, my lover?
When missing you each night in grief so bitter.
Eight
Beautiful flowers before my eyes were fleeting by:
Helplessly faded and fallen with short life,
Undergoing all changes of time with surprise?
A piece of icy music the frost wind all night was playing,
Leaving all flowers and grass in horror shivering
And withered leaves and flowers on the shores sighing.
With all desolate everywhere,
I gazed up at the Milky Way there,
Scratching my head in despair.
Who would stay with a homeless bird at the church dome?
Can you, staying alone, still remember that lovely home?

Is life like a wedding banquet of no pressure?
But few chances we have for such a night of pleasure.
Turning my head in the light after shaking your hand
I find the spring cloud gone far from my waste land.
Don’t stir sadness
For your parting bitterness.
Just do as the willow branches do freely
Hanging themselves in the wind leisurely.
For joy and pleasure, please fill up your cup
And drink with yourself alone all bottoms up.
Ten
Seeing you off to the sea,
I forced a smile like a morning glory before thee,
Concealing the dark cloud in my heart you would never see.
Alone I searched for a road bathed in moonlight,
Counting idly all the trees by the river in sight
And murmuring to myself by the lonely lamp alight
Can’t all my vows that I will make true
Convey my everlasting love for you?
I would like to be the catkins before your carriage
To go with you to all corners of the world with spring message.

The fragrance and beauty of April are fading,
With flowers scattered and willows flicking,
Which makes me lazily dozing.
The east wind last night whistled a heartbreaking song of parting,
And the open field is covered with fallen flowers sadly sobbing.
Don’t say that the more you miss your loved one,
The closer to you she will come.
Unlike the regular tides, time not reined waits for none.
Cuckoos lamenting faintly everywhere without the spring sun,
Do cherish your each day and your each month.

A cuckoo, the spring soul, was moaning in a tree last night
Spitting out all her gold threads for the human plight.
Not bearing to hear the human parting tune, she fled in fright
After pouring out a heartbreaking song into the moonlight.
God of spring was expected to leave behind her catkins panting,
But like the rain in the wind my mood was drifting!
When I alone listened to the swallows twittering with the sun setting:
Where is my loved one when into rivers flowers are falling?
看凡眼能否从卑贱认出真身;
One
Bliss comes like an immortal in fable,
Disguised as a skinny beggar in rags,
Kowtows to prayers for blessing on crags
And sees who can tell him from the humble.
He tours as an illustrious ancient king,
With countless flags and carriages like clouds
Against sudden attacks by mobs in shrouds
So none can’t find him in any guard ring.
But today so natural and charming,
To me you come, my beautiful maiden,
And in your clear and bright eyes like morning
And in your laugh, without hesitation,
Abashed and stunned, I spot his soul brightness.
Behold, my eyes shed tears of devotion!
低说万千神秘底名字和诳语;
Two
You have appeared, many times, my bliss star,
A hazy phantom like a rosy cloud,
And a fruit on the steep cliff hanging proud
Shining bright and flickering, near but far,
And laughing at all pickings anyone tries!
But now, when I hang back in deep worry,
Whirling like color cloud, you fall slowly.
Eternal light and flame burns in your eyes!
Come, my bliss, let’s hug tight and quietly
Watch the blue flowers fading in daylight
Let the vast dark, the hupe and spring, lowly
Say the names of all mysteries and lies
Nothing can disturb our hearts any more
My soul has found your soul that always flies!
声势汹汹向着我舞爪和张牙;
我再听不见一丝和谐的音响;
一片光华忽飘然像从天下降;
狰狞的面目纷纷地悄然遁隐;
Three
Human evil once drove me to despair,
Bare fangs and brandish claws causing great fears.
Uproar of fleer and curse lashing my ears,
I heard no more of tuneful sound anywhere.
With cliff on the left and abyss the right
Before my eyes were evil ghosts in mobs
My soul was lost forgetting sighs and sobs
From the sky suddenly fell a cloud bright;
Like the lark’s clear ode at dawn as a knife,
Dispelling the night shadows in forest;
Monstrous faces fled in succession noiseless.
Hence the dismal, noisy and rough of life,
With traps of time and nets of fate saddest,
All turned into purple love and gold peace.
Four
For you I picked the last apple of all,
Looking so mellow, so full and shining;
Out from its heart came a flush glistening,
Like the lights afar in the woods we saw.
Because, while clusters of partners of his,
Vied to be tinted by the sun madly.
In the shade of dim green it quietly,
Flamed slightly, waiting for the sweeping breeze:
Like that lingering love I had sent you
So purely sincere and yet so bashful
Growing only in my lonely heart blue
And never dared to peep at the night sky
Let alone known by others, and yourself!
Take it; it shivers so when the winds sigh!
我们底幸福脉脉地相偎;
Five
Abreast around the old city we hang
With our happiness red in the sunset
And the sweet breeze of date-flowers we met.
The night sky of the late May loudly sang
Intoxicated in all our youth dreams
With that breath harmony of sunset spell
We stopped by instinct and listened—like the bell,
Quite far, echoing in our souls like streams
Abreast we roamed the old city like zoo;
Our felicities snuggled together,
You were silent, and my soul merged into
Your black eyes so serene and so gentle
Like a clear thought, and a new crescent moon
Rising slow to the chaste sky of crystal.
Six
Lone star! Skirting the dusk you won’t get warm,
Like a drop of autumn tears to fall chill.
At you when I look up, my heart does thrill
With a love flutter and a lonely qualm
Is your soft light preoccupying alone
My coming happiness? Or yearn for
A remote dusk (in dream or death before)
Warmly on our both caresses you once shone?
My love, oh, my love! If our souls that hoot
haven’t echoed each other perfectly,
How this great thirst puzzled at my tongue root,
(From the day I saw you,) ice loneliness
And homesick fret burning in heart make me,
A lost sheep, plunge into your arms’softness?
