         怀斯坦 - 休 - 奥登 (Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907-1973) 公认的现代诗坛名家，奥登1907年出生在英国，1946年成为美国公民。他充分利用英美两国的历史传统，作品的内涵因而更深广。“奥登”（Audun）曾在冰岛的传奇故事中出现过，而奥登的写作，尤其是诗歌的写作技巧，深受北欧主要诗歌派别的影响，被公认为艾略特之后最重要的英语诗人，也是著名的同性恋者。他46岁的时候开始和18岁的诗人Chester Kallman相恋，1973年奥登在维也纳死于心脏病。

But on earth indifference is the least

我们困扰环宇，若无其事，一走了之


How should we like it were stars to burn                       3   
看呐，热热切切满天星，炽炽烈烈洒深情
With a passion for us we could not return?
回映，回映，我们怎能不回映？
If equal affection cannot be,

不想啊，看星消月殒，看太阳离遁   
I should learn to look at an empty sky
