The world is too much with us;late and soon,
Getting and spending,we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away,a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this,for everything,we are out of tune;
It moves us not. —Great God! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn➀;
So might I,standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn➁.
➀下文的两个海神都出于希腊神话。希腊神话带有明显的多神教色彩,与属于一神教的基督教教义诸多牴牾,因此被视为异教。
➁普罗谛乌斯,变化多端的海神,原形为老人。特里同,半人半鱼的海神,他的螺号既能使海涛汹涌,也能使海面平静。在以上两行中,华兹华斯化用了斯宾塞和弥尔顿的诗句。
