（Untitled）

The world is too much with us；late and soon，
Getting and spending，we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours；
We have given our hearts away，a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon；
The winds that will be howling at all hours，
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers；
For this，for everything，we are out of tune；
It moves us not. —Great God! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn➀；
So might I，standing on this pleasant lea，
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn；
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea；
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn➁.

➀下文的两个海神都出于希腊神话。希腊神话带有明显的多神教色彩，与属于一神教的基督教教义诸多牴牾，因此被视为异教。
➁普罗谛乌斯，变化多端的海神，原形为老人。特里同，半人半鱼的海神，他的螺号既能使海涛汹涌，也能使海面平静。在以上两行中，华兹华斯化用了斯宾塞和弥尔顿的诗句。

尘世让人欲壑难填，我们
忙于赚钱，用于挥霍，操劳一生，
对养育我们的自然漠不关心；
为追名逐利，我们送掉了心灵！
大海，她向明月袒露着胸怀；
狂风，无息无止地嘶鸣，
这会儿宛若入睡的花朵悄然沉寂；
可是我们与这一切都不再相融，
上帝啊，我们怎么竟然麻木不仁？
我宁愿做异教徒，做陈腐教义的乳婴，
这样，我站在这片宜人的草地上，
就会一眼看到那抚慰我孤独的情景；
会看到变幻海神从海面浮出，
会听到老人鱼海神吹响的螺声。

诗人的自然主义思想，深受卢梭回归自然的思想的影响。回归自然的思想，就是在批判当时的资本主义对物质的贪求及对自然的破坏。

（Untitled）

Scorn not the Sonnet；Critic，you have frowned，
Mindless of its just honours；with this key
Shakespeare unlocked his heart；the melody➀
Of this small lute gave ease to Petrarch’s wound➁；
A thousand times this pipe did Tasso sound➂；
With it Camoens soothed an exile’s grief➃；
The Sonnet glittered a gay myrtle leaf
Amid the cypress with which Dante crowned➄
His visionary brow: a glow-worm lamp➅，
It cheered mild Spenser，called from Faery-land
To struggle through dark ways；and when a damp➆
Fell round the path of Milton，in his hand
The Thing became a trumpet；whence he blew
Soul-animating strains—alas，too few➇!

➀莎士比亚写过十四行诗154首。
➁彼特拉克（1304—1374），意大利诗人。写过十四行诗三百多首，歌咏他对少女萝拉的爱情。“创痛”指爱情上的失意。
➂塔索（1544—1595），意大利诗人，写过十四行诗多首。
➃卡蒙斯（1524？—1580），葡萄牙诗人，写过十四行诗多首。他曾长期被放逐，浪迹于摩洛哥、印度等地。“逐客的离情”指此。
➄但丁为贝雅特里齐而写的抒情诗集《新生》中包括十四行诗多首。头上缠着柏枝，是表示对贝雅特里齐的悼念（欧洲人常以柏枝表示悼念）。
➅斯宾塞（1552—1599），英国诗人。他的十四行诗押韵形式独具一格，称为“斯宾塞体”。他以长诗《仙后》闻名于世，所以下行提到“仙乡”。
➆约翰•弥尔顿（1608—1674），卓越的英国革命诗人和政治家。
➇弥尔顿扩大了十四行诗的题材和视野，但他总共只写了23首十四行诗（18首用英文，5首用意大利文），所以华兹华斯认为他写得还“太少”。

别小觑十四行诗，批评家，
你颦眉蹙额，轻视它应有的荣光；
它是一把钥匙，打开莎士比亚的心扉；
它是一只琴，舒缓彼特拉克的惆怅；
它是一把长笛，塔索吹了千万遍；
伴它，卡蒙斯抚慰流放的悲伤；
它宛如一片长青叶，闪烁着欢乐，
辉映但丁戴着的松枝，那有他的梦想；
它像只萤火虫，令性情恬淡的
斯宾塞激动不已，他毅然告别仙乡，
勇敢踏上与黑暗作斗的征途；
它是只号角，弥尔顿迷失于路上，
他就会吹响手中的号角——吹响激励
心灵的旋律，但惜未能经久飘扬！

I watch，and long have watched，with calm regret
Yon slowly-sinking star—immortal Sire
（So might he seem）of all the glittering quire!
Blue ether still surrounds him—yet—and yet；
But now the horizon’s rocky parapet
Is reached，where，forfeiting his bright attire，
He burns—transmuted to a dusky fire—
Then pays submissively the appointed debt
To the flying moments，and is seen no more.
Angels and gods! We struggle with our fate，              
While health，power，glory，from their height decline，
Depressed；and then extinguished：and our state，
In this，how different，lost Star，from thine，
That no to-morrow shall our beams restore!

我默默地感叹，久久地伫望，
那一轮缓缓西沉的红日——他俨然
就是那万世闪烁的群星的圣主！
蓝天依旧，依旧静静簇拥在他身边，
但是此刻，他就要脱下亮装，
落入地平线上宛如城垣的群山的后面，
他在燃烧，若就要燃尽的一堆火，
他终于顺从如命，向飞逝的时间
禅让退位，随后便黯然消失。
天使，天神！我们同命运相争相伴，
我们的强壮，力量，荣光，从顶峰衰落，
消沉，最后熄灭；可我们这个景观
与你，西沉的红日，是多么不同，
因我们永无明朝复升的灿烂！

Not Love，not War，nor the tumultuous swell
Of civil conflict，nor the wrecks of change，
Nor Duty struggling with afflictions strange—
Not these alone inspire the tuneful shell；
But where untroubled peace and concord dwell，
There also is the Muse not loth to range➁，
Watching the twilight smoke of cot or grange，
Skyward ascending from a woody dell.
Meek aspirations please her，lone endeavour，
And sage content，and placid melancholy➂；
She loves to gaze upon a crystal river—
Diaphanous because it travels slowly；
Soft is the music that would charm for ever；
The flower of sweetest smell is shy and lowly.

➀这首诗的大意是：诗人不要只唱激越奔放的调子，宁静婉约、温柔敦厚的歌曲才有永久的魅力。其实，作者本人中年以前也不乏雄健豪宕之作（例如《献给民族独立和自由的诗》中的若干篇什）；而这首诗则是他中年以后（53岁）发表的，大约是由于年事渐高，英锐之气日减，沉静淡泊的一面愈来愈占上风。
➁缪斯，希腊神话中主管诗歌、音乐和艺术的女神。上文第4行的“诗琴”即竖琴，是缪斯手中的乐器。下文第9行、第11行的“她”都是指缪斯。
➂“明智知足”、“志趣恬淡”、“寂寞勤苦”、“沉郁安详”等语，基本上是作者的自画像。作者认为，诗人的形象应当如此，缪斯所瞩望于诗人者也是如此。

不必只唱爱情，战争，
不必只唱内乱风暴，沧桑巨变，
不必只唱英雄志士艰苦卓绝的奋斗；
优美的竖琴并非只弹奏雄健，
它也能拨动出悠然的平静与和谐；
你看缪斯，她最愿漫游翩跹——
她愿眺望黄昏时葱翠的山谷里
那村舍田庄袅袅升起的炊烟；
她喜欢志趣恬淡，喜欢寂寞辛勤，
喜欢明智知足，喜欢沉郁祥安；
她最爱凝视那明镜般的河流，
河流清澈见底，因水缓缓流转；
温柔是一首乐曲，有着永恒的魅力，
花朵羞愧谦微，但却芬芳香甜。
