There,by the Sheepfold,sometimes was he seen
Sitting alone,or with his faithful Dog,
Then old,beside him,lying at his feet.
The length of full seven years,from time to time,
He at the building of this Sheepfold wrought,
And left the work unfinished when he died.
Three years,or little more,did Isabel
Survive her Husband: at her death the estate
Was sold,and went into a stranger’s hand.
The Cottage which was named the EVENING STAR
Is gone—the ploughshare has been through the ground
On which it stood;great changes have been wrought
In all the neighbourhood:—yet the oak is left
That grew beside their door;and the remains
Of the unfinished Sheepfold may be seen
Beside the boisterous brook of Greenhead Ghyll.

原来的老牧人一家的门边;

The Waterfall and the Eglantine

‘Begone,thou fond presumptuous Elf,’
Exclaimed an angry Voice,
‘Nor dare to thrust thy foolish self
Between me and my choice!’
A small Cascade fresh swoln with snows
Thus threatened a poor Briar-rose,
That,all bespattered with his foam,
And dancing high and dancing low,
Was living,as a child might know,
In an unhappy home.

‘Dost thou presume my course to block?
Off,off! Or,puny Thing!
I’ll hurl thee headlong with the rock
To which thy fibres cling.’
The Flood was tyrannous and strong;
The patient Briar suffered long,
Nor did he utter groan or sigh,
Hoping the danger would be past;
But,seeing no relief,at last,
He ventured to reply.

‘Ah!’said the Briar,‘blame me not;
Why should we dwell in strife?
We who in this sequestered spot
Once lived a happy life!
You stirred me on my rocky bed—
What pleasure through my veins you spread
The summer long,from day to day,
My leaves you freshened and bedewed;
Nor was it common gratitude
That did your cares repay.

‘When spring came on with bud and bell,
Among these rocks did I
Before you hang my wreaths to tell
That gentle days were nigh!
And in the sultry summer hours
I sheltered you with leaves and flowers;
And in my leaves—now shed and gone,
The linnet lodged,and for us two
Chanted his pretty songs,when you
Had little voice or none.

‘But now proud thoughts are in your breast—
What grief is mine you see,
Ah! would you think,even yet how blest
Together we might be!
Though of both leaf and flower bereft,
Some ornaments to me are left—
Rich store of scarlet hips is mine,
With which I,in my humble way,
Would deck you many a winter day,
A happy Eglantine!’

What more he said I cannot tell,
The Torrent down the rocky dell
Came thundering loud and fast;
I listened,nor aught else could hear;
The Briar quaked—and much I fear
Those accents were his last.

The Green Linnet

Beneath these fruit-tree boughs that shed
Their snow-white blossoms on my head,
With brightest sunshine round me spread
Of spring’s unclouded weather,
In this sequestered nook how sweet
To sit upon my orchard-seat!
And birds and flowers once more to greet,
My last year’s friends together.

One have I marked,the happiest guest
In all this covert of the blest:
Hail to Thee,far above the rest
In joy of voice and pinion!
Thou,Linnet! in thy green array,
Presiding Spirit here to-day,
Dost lead the revels of the May;
And this is thy dominion.

While birds,and butterflies,and flowers,
Make all one band of paramours,
Thou,ranging up and down the bowers,
Art sole in thy employment:
A Life,a Presence like the Air,
Scattering thy gladness without care,
Too blest with any one to pair;
Thyself thy own enjoyment.

Amid yon tuft of hazel trees,
That twinkle to the gusty breeze,
Behold him perched in ecstasies,
Yet seeming still to hover;
There! where the flutter of his wings
Upon his back and body flings
Shadows and sunny glimmerings,
That cover him all over.

My dazzled sight he oft deceives,
A Brother of the dancing leaves;
Then flits,and from the cottage-eaves
Pours forth his song in gushes;
As if by that exulting strain
He mocked and treated with disdain
The voiceless Form he chose to feign,
While fluttering in the bushes.

羽毛鲜艳,众里之英卓;

且仿佛就要飞升;

大唱起来,喋喋滔滔;

Song for the Spinning-wheel

Swiftly turn the murmuring wheel!
Night has brought the welcome hour,
When the weary fingers feel
Help,as if from faery power;
Dewy night o’ershades the ground,
Turn the swift wheel round and round!

Now,beneath the starry sky,
Couch the widely-scattered sheep;
Ply the pleasant labour ply!
For the spindle,while they sleep,
Runs with speed more smooth and fine,
Gathering up a trustier line.

Short-lived likings may be bred
By a glance from fickle eyes;
But true love is like the thread
Which the kindly wool supplies,
When the flocks are all at rest,
Sleeping on the mountain’s breast.

The Poet and the Caged Turtledove

As often as I murmur here
My half-formed melodies,
Straight from her osier mansion near,
The Turtledove replies:
Though silent as a leaf before,
The captive promptly coos;
Is it to teach her own soft lore,
Or second my weak Muse?

I rather think the gentle Dove
Is murmuring a reproof,
Displeased that I from lays of love
Have dared to keep aloof;
That I,a Bard of hill and dale,
Have carolled,fancy free,
As if nor dove nor nightingale
Had heart or voice for me➀.

If such thy meaning,O forbear,
Sweet Bird! to do me wrong;
Love,blessed Love,is everywhere
The spirit of my song:
‘Mid grove,and by the calm fireside,
Love animates my lyre—
That coo again!—’tis not to chide,
I feel,but to inspire.
