Upon the Sight of a Beautifull Picture➀

Praised be the Art whose subtle power could stay
Yon cloud，and fix it in that glorious shape；
Nor would permit the thin smoke to escape，
Nor those bright sunbeams to forsake the day；
Which stopped that band of travellers on their way，
Ere they were lost within the shady wood；
And showed the Bark upon the glassy flood
For ever anchored in her sheltering bay.
Soul-soothing Art! whom Morning，Noontide，Even，
Do serve with all their changeful pageantry；
Thou，with ambition modest yet sublime，
Here，for the sight of mortal man，hast given
To one brief moment caught from fleeting time
The appropriate calm of blest eternity➁.

➀乔治•博蒙特爵士，英国国会议员，风景画家，华兹华斯的友人。
➁这首诗中，前8行的4个“它”指“妙笔”，后6行的3个“你”指“手笔”，都是指博蒙特的绘画艺术。末行的“它”指“这一瞬息”。

赞美这丹青妙笔吧，它精湛的笔力
能遏住飘云，凝成那灿烂之景；
它不许那袅袅烟霭随风飘散，
也不让那郎朗的阳光西沉昏暝；
在那些游人要消失在林中的时候，
它让他们停了下来，不再漫行；
在如镜的水面上，它使一叶轻舟
靠泊河湾，隐在那儿悄无一声。
抚慰心灵的手笔，你将清晨，中午，
黄昏，变换的景观，皆画得入胜；
你大气磅礴，而又温文尔雅；
为让世人能得欣赏，你从飞骋
时光里截取这么短暂的一瞬，
赐它以神圣永恒中的宜人的沉静。


杨德豫先生对这首诗的理解和译笔都甚佳，他将两个Art分译为“妙笔”和“手笔”，然后以诸“它”及诸“你”深而描述，深见先生用力。云风所译，保持了杨老的骨脉。

To Sleep

A flock of sheep that leisurely pass by，
One after one；the sound of rain，and bees
Murmuring；the fall of rivers，winds and seas，
Smooth fields，white sheets of water，and pure sky；
I have thought of all by turns，and yet do lie➀
Sleepless! and soon the small birds’melodies
Must hear，first uttered from my orchard trees；
And the first cuckoo’s melancholy cry.
Even thus last night，and two nights more，I lay，
And could not win thee，Sleep! by any stealth:
So do not let me wear to-night away:
Without Thee what is all the morning’s wealth?
Come，blessed barrier between day and day，
Dear mother of fresh thoughts and joyous health!

致睡眠

一群羊一头跟一头慢悠悠走过，
蜜蜂的嗡嗡声，雨水的滴答响，
河水流淌，微风轻拂，海浪拍岸，
田野平静，水面清澈，天空苍苍，
我逐一想着这些，仍无法入眠，
再过一会儿，从我果园的树上，
小鸟就要开始叽叽喳喳的鸣叫，
还有那杜鹃也要开始忧郁的吟唱。
昨夜这样，还有几个晚上都是如此，
睡眠啊，我躺着，你不让我入梦乡，
今晚我恳求你，别再叫我受折磨，
没有你，哪来早晨充沛的力量？
来吧，神圣的屏障，你划分昼夜，
你是母亲，你滋养灵感和健康！

Surprised by joy—impatient as the Wind
I turned to share the transport—Oh! with whom
But Thee，deep buried in the silent tomb，
That spot which no vicissitude can find?
Love，faithful love，recalled thee to my mind—
But how could I forget thee? Through what power，
Even for the least division of an hour，
Have I been so beguiled as to be blind
To my most grievous loss! —That thought’s return
Was the worst pang that sorrow ever bore，
Save one，one only，when I stood forlorn，
Knowing my heart’s best treasure was no more；
That neither present time，nor years unborn
Could to my sight that heavenly face restore.

➀为作者夭折的女儿凯瑟琳而作。凯瑟琳生于1808年9月，死于1812年6月。

每次遇到惊喜，我就急得如风，
转身就想找到你分享这欢畅，
可你啊却深深埋进了死寂的坟墓，
九泉下再也看不到尘世的沧桑。
爱，深深的爱叫我把你想起——
可我怎能把你忘记？又有什么力量，
哪怕是只在短短的一瞬间里，
能把我的双眼蒙蔽，叫我遗忘
我最悲痛的损失？这哀思浮起，
把我久已的悲伤推入痛苦的深巷，
除此，除此之外，我孤身一人，
我知道心肝宝贝已殒玉消香，
从今往后，我是再也看不见了
你那张天使般的天真可爱的脸庞。

（Untitled）

It is a beauteous evening，calm and free
The holy time is quiet as a Nun
Breathless with adoration；the broad sun
Is sinking down in its tranquility；
The gentleness of heaven broods o’er the Sea；
Listen! the mighty Being is awake➀，
And doth with his eternal motion make
A sound like thunder—everlastingly.
Dear Child! dear Girl! that walkest with me here，
If thou appear untouched by solemn thought，
Thy nature is not therefore less divine:
Thou liest in Abraham’s bosom all the year➁；
And worshipp’st at the Temple’s inner shrine，
God being with thee when we know it not.

➀ the mighty Being 和下行的his 都指the Sea。
➁亚伯拉罕，《旧约•创世纪》中所说的犹太人的始祖。“亚伯拉罕的胸怀”，意为天国或“极乐世界”，典出《新约•路加福音》第16章。这行诗是说那个女孩终年与大自然脉息相通。下面两行进一步指出：亲近大自然也就是亲近了上帝。

无题➀

多美的黄昏啊，沉静，闲适，
这神圣的时光宛如安详的修女，
因静穆而屏息；一轮红日，
在缓缓而又默默地西沉而去；
这轻曼温柔的天空抚慰着大海，
听啊，这浩瀚已醒，他有生命之力，
他又掀起了无穷无尽的澎湃，
发出轰鸣的雷声——万古不息。
亲爱的小姑娘，你跟着我来到这儿，
即使你没有感受到这庄严的思绪➁，
你的天性也不会因此缺乏神性，
因你终年躺在亚伯拉罕的怀里，
虔诚崇拜圣殿内的神龛，
无论我们知否，上帝与你在一起。

➀此诗写于1802年法国加来。诗人写他与九岁的女儿卡洛琳黄昏漫步海滩的情景，诗人表达若其女儿未被这美景感动，那是因她太小，她本身就在自然之中。
➁庄严的思绪：可参阅《廷腾寺》一诗，诗人面对自然油然而生的肃穆的思想。
